About Me

My name is Darcy Irwin and I am the owner and operator of Swimfit.ca.   I have been coaching and teaching competitive swimming for 12 years and am the assistant head coach of the Nanaimo Riptide Swim Team in British Columbia, Canada. I am in charge of running the teams learn to swim program while coaching provincial, national and international level swimmers.

I train and then certify new coaches how to teach swimming all over British Columbia.  I do consulting work with other swim teams and pool facilities to help them develop or improve their learn to swim programs.   I coach the local Masters swim team the Nanaimo Ebbtides, and run adult learn to swim, tri athlete and fitness swimming groups 4 days a week. 

I also do personal coaching with individuals of all abilities ranging from those afraid of the water who can’t even put their face in, to iron man and Olympic distance triathlon competitors.  Some clients ask for help setting goals, both swimming and personal.  This service is offered to interested individuals at my discretion only.  Myself and all other Swimfit coaches are certified under the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), Sears I Can Swim Canada and the National Lifeguard Service (NLS).  

I swam competitively for 13 years.  I competed at a national level in two sports, swimming and speed skating.  I started coaching when I was 14 years old and have not missed a year since.  I consider myself very fortunate to have a job doing something I love.  It’s fun, always different and really hard to have a bad day.  How can you have a bad day watching somebody improve right in front of your eyes?

In October 2010 I was a Team Canada coach for the DISCO World Championships in Taipei, Taiwan.  I was a gold medalist at the 2010 Canadian Masters National Swimming Championships.  I currently swim 5 days and try to get 3-4 yoga sessions and gym workouts completed per week.
